A step by step guide to creating a routine & setting goals for your busy life!

One of the most important parts of being organized and being at the top of your game is your ability to schedule a routine and set goals that you can stick to. I love finding ways to get & stay organized. As a busy teacher and business owner I have struggled to create a routine & set goals that truly worked for me until now. I’ve found that using a planner with Bullet Journaling is a winning combination. I am not looking back. This planning system has worked wonders for me. I’m sure you will find the same success with these simple planner hacks.

First of all, If you are not familiar with what bullet journaling is let me give you a little run down. Bullet journaling is a system of tracking your goals, scheduling and staying on top of your to-do list. It was developed by Ryder Carroll in 2015 and has taken off since then. Bullet Journal Meets Erin Condren Life Planner

First things first, If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know that the Erin Condren Life Planner is my planner of choice. I took my Erin Condren completely apart in order to combine it my EC TakeNote Notebook. Don’t worry, It’s not nearly as scary as it seems. In fact this process was WAY easier then I was expecting it to be and I am thrilled with the outcome.

I was able to create the perfect #frankenplanner, only including the pages that I really wanted/needed and included pages (like my business planner pages *cough, cough*). If you’re interested in learning more about how to make changes to your planner Jennuine Teaching has a great How-To video on uncoiling and recoiling your Erin Condren Planner.  Note: Erin Condren has FINALLY brought back the Deluxe Monthly Planner which would be ideal for this scheduling system.

Scheduling a Routine 

1. It’s #FrankenPlanner time! OK, if you don’t want to worry about something going wrong you can get a planner like the EC Deluxe Monthly Planner that will take all a lot of the work out of it for you.

2. Once I had my planner the way that I wanted it, It was time to start adding in different features of the Bullet Journal system. The first thing that I did was develop my own key, so that I could easily bullet everything and know if it was an event, work, errand, to-do etc. After my key was developed it was time to put it to use. You can use either a vertical or horizontal planner layout but I feel a horizontal layout works best to see everything at a glance.

3.The next is probably the feature that I like love the most – time blocking. I have been drawing in a block of time from 6am to 12am. Each day I will color in the blocks of time that are accounted for like school, working on my blog, even things as trivial as cleaning the house so I can see what I’m doing with my time and where I have extra time to be utilized. This system has made my days feel SO much longer. Kinda crazy how simple it is! You’ll notice by doing this simple step that you will start to see your routine taking shape. You will be able to see all of those things that you already do everyday. Knowing what your routines looks like will help you when setting goals for the future.

Goal Setting Made Easy

Time blocking helps a great deal when it comes to setting new routines & goals for yourself. Taking the knowledge that you now know from your daily break down, you can sit down and figure out what your goals are for each area of your life. I do this using the Getting Things Done model found here.

For example, I know that increasing and keeping sales consistent is one of my top business goals. Knowing this will help me to gear my actions towards obtaining that goal.  I know to get to my goal I will need to do X, Y, and Z. In my case this would be blogging more often to increase my business base, creating new killers products and having a bigger presence on social media. Now I can start to schedule in when & how I am going to go about meeting each of these smaller goals to drive business so that I can reach that bigger picture goal.

Make It Work For You

Now comes the fun part. OK so it’s all fun but this is where you get to start customizing your planner to fit your schedule. Remember those note pages we added to our planner? This is where you get to utilize them. Create pages that are geared towards your goals. For instance, I have one page where I outline each blog post I will be writing in the next 6 months and their date to go live. *A due date (even if it changes) is important when it comes to working towards your goal.

Time Management. By knowing what content I plan to put out ahead of time, I am able to work on a post a bit at a time. I can work towards my big picture goal without burning myself out. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you are super woman and you can finish every task in one go. This will make you crazy and lead to procrastination. Instead, break your goal up into easily obtainable action goals that you can work on over a period of time.
