Create Hand-Drawn Vector Graphics – Class Review

Calling all creatives! Today I want to review an amazing class for aspiring digital artists. Back in December I began taking the Design Garden’s Foundations Class and quickly fell in love with it.

If you love to draw and want to turn your drawings into digital graphics, I strongly suggest checking out this class. It’s great for beginners and not so beginners( like myself) alike. It’s no secret that I have been transitioning my shop from cute to feminine with watercolor being my main focus.

This class has kept me on point, dedicated to my work and disciplined. Truth be told when my class ends this week, I’m going to be a little bummed. I have truly loved working through all of the lessons. I’m already panning on taking another class.

Learn to Create Hand Drawn Vector Graphics

What I love about this class is that it wasn’t all about  drawing learning techniques. This class truly covers it all from conception to completion. You will learn basic drawing, design tips and even how and where to to sell your graphics.

This 6 week course takes you step by step through the design process.

A brief overview of the course:

I am so excited to announce that all of my hard work and determination has finally paid off. I have released two new watercolor clip art sets in my Teachers Pay Teachers and Etsy shops! It has been a long journey getting to this point, with all of the watercolor swatches and trying out different techniques BUT I am so thrilled with how my first sets in the Watercolor Series have turned out!

Please enjoy this Watercolor Pencil as a preview of the Create Clipart & Illustration – Watercolor Series. I hope you love it as much as I do. Thank you for growing with me as a business and supporting these changes in my business. I value each and every one of you. You’re feedback is important to me so that I can continue to bring you nothing but the best, high quality graphics. I can’t wait to hear what you think!

2017 is a year of re-branding and expanding

Hello lovelies! I hope 2017 is treating you AMAZINGLY so far. With the new year many changes are coming to Create Clipart. Can we just talk about the new logo for a second. I am in LOVE! I have been on the biggest hand lettering kick lately and was just playing around with my logo. I had no intentions of re-branding but with this years coming changes it seems only right.

As many of you know, I have been playing around the adding different watercolor techniques to my illustrations and will begin to offer these in both my Teachers Pay Teachers and Etsy stores. With this change comes minor changes in my design style. I will still be offering the same great clips that you know and love, just with a little added flair.

As I am working to expand into my newly founded Etsy storefront (YIPEE!), I am also expanding the scope of my illustrations to reach beyond clips for the classroom. I will be offering stock illustrations, clip art and paper packs to add a little whimsy to the everyday. I am so excited to be designing clipart that can be used by teachers, scrap bookers and also for personal use.

Here is just a little peek into what I’ve been up to in the Create office. With much love( and coffee), Laura

How To Schedule A Routine & Set Goals For Your Busy Life

A step by step guide to creating a routine & setting goals for your busy life!

One of the most important parts of being organized and being at the top of your game is your ability to schedule a routine and set goals that you can stick to. I love finding ways to get & stay organized. As a busy teacher and business owner I have struggled to create a routine & set goals that truly worked for me until now. I’ve found that using a planner with Bullet Journaling is a winning combination. I am not looking back. This planning system has worked wonders for me. I’m sure you will find the same success with these simple planner hacks.

First of all, If you are not familiar with what bullet journaling is let me give you a little run down. Bullet journaling is a system of tracking your goals, scheduling and staying on top of your to-do list. It was developed by Ryder Carroll in 2015 and has taken off since then. If you are interested in learning more about the Bullet Journaling System I suggesting checking out The Pen Addict Podcast interview with Ryder Carroll.

Bullet Journal Meets Erin Condren Life Planner

Become confident and stress free with easy planning while having time to spend doing the things that truly matter to you!

ECplannerhacks

First things first, If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know that the Erin Condren Life Planner is my planner of choice. I took my Erin Condren completely apart in order to combine it my EC TakeNote Notebook. Don’t worry, It’s not nearly as scary as it seems. In fact this process was WAY easier then I was expecting it to be and I am thrilled with the outcome.

I was able to create the perfect #frankenplanner, only including the pages that I really wanted/needed and included pages (like my business planner pages *cough, cough*). If you’re interested in learning more about how to make changes to your planner Jennuine Teaching has a great How-To video on uncoiling and recoiling your Erin Condren Planner.  Note: Erin Condren has FINALLY brought back the Deluxe Monthly Planner which would be ideal for this scheduling system.

Scheduling a Routine

1. It’s #FrankenPlanner time! OK, if you don’t want to worry about something going wrong you can get a planner like the EC Deluxe Monthly Planner that will take all a lot of the work out of it for you.

2. Once I had my planner the way that I wanted it, It was time to start adding in different features of the Bullet Journal system. The first thing that I did was develop my own key, so that I could easily bullet everything and know if it was an event, work, errand, to-do etc. After my key was developed it was time to put it to use. You can use either a vertical or horizontal planner layout but I feel a horizontal layout works best to see everything at a glance.

3.The next is probably the feature that I like love the most – time blocking. I have been drawing in a block of time from 6am to 12am. Each day I will color in the blocks of time that are accounted for like school, working on my blog, even things as trivial as cleaning the house so I can see what I’m doing with my time and where I have extra time to be utilized. This system has made my days feel SO much longer. Kinda crazy how simple it is! You’ll notice by doing this simple step that you will start to see your routine taking shape. You will be able to see all of those things that you already do everyday. Knowing what your routines looks like will help you when setting goals for the future.

Goal Setting Made Easy

Time blocking helps a great deal when it comes to setting new routines & goals for yourself. Taking the knowledge that you now know from your daily break down, you can sit down and figure out what your goals are for each area of your life. I do this using the Getting Things Done model found here.

For example, I know that increasing and keeping sales consistent is one of my top business goals. Knowing this will help me to gear my actions towards obtaining that goal.  I know to get to my goal I will need to do X, Y, and Z. In my case this would be blogging more often to increase my business base, creating new killers products and having a bigger presence on social media. Now I can start to schedule in when & how I am going to go about meeting each of these smaller goals to drive business so that I can reach that bigger picture goal.

Make It Work For You

Now comes the fun part. OK so it’s all fun but this is where you get to start customizing your planner to fit your schedule. Remember those note pages we added to our planner? This is where you get to utilize them. Create pages that are geared towards your goals. For instance, I have one page where I outline each blog post I will be writing in the next 6 months and their date to go live. *A due date (even if it changes) is important when it comes to working towards your goal.

Time Management. By knowing what content I plan to put out ahead of time, I am able to work on a post a bit at a time. I can work towards my big picture goal without burning myself out. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you are super woman and you can finish every task in one go. This will make you crazy and lead to procrastination. Instead, break your goal up into easily obtainable action goals that you can work on over a period of time.

Now on to my game changing tip. It is no secret that having a good classroom management plan can be the key to having a well run classroom. Today my tip is one that I have found to be so helpful. Drum roll please, secret students. I began introducing the idea of secret students into my classroom last year and my students LOVED it! This is a great classroom management technique to keep kids motivated to stay on task. A secret student is a randomly selected student that you will monitor.

Each day I pull a stick with a students name on it. Once a student has been selected, I usually make it a point to remind my class that I will be watching the secret student. Throughout the day, you can keep reminding them of your secret student as it is needed. You might say something like ” It looks like our secret student is ready for the next lesson” or “our secret student is sitting nicely”.

If the student has a good day he/she is recognized. If he/she does not do well, the student is not named and I will tells the class that the secret student did not have a good day but tomorrow will be a better day. This is a really simple strategy that you can begin utilizing at anytime. I have included a free sign to be used in your classroom. Laminate it and put it up in the classroom as another reminder to your students. Once a student has been recognized their name is written onto the line with a dry erase marker. This sign comes in color and printer friendly black and white. Just click on the image below to begin your download.

Organize your business with the right planner

When you’re a blogger, business owner, and teacher it can be hard to keep track of absolutely everything. I have spent countless hours searching for the perfect planner to meet ALL of my needs.

This planner is durable and has a the ability to be broken up into sections that suit your life style. The Erin Condren Planner comes in both a vertical and horizontal layout, both are great but I prefer the vertical layout for my needs. I use planner stickers to change the morning, afternoon and evening headers to life, school and TeachersPayTeachers this helps me to see everything all in one place.

You can check try it at $10 off {here}. This is by far my favorite planner on the market. It fits perfectly into my purse or teacher bag {depending on the day}. I take it everywhere with me BUT I still needed more control and power over how my my planner looks and functions.

For a while I had both my Erin Condren Planner AND a separate binder for all of my TpT and blogging stuff. I quickly realized that this just didn’t work for me. I need everything in one place or I just won’t look at it. #Teachertruth. I needed to design pages that could be added to my existing life planner.

Enter, my TpT Business Planner {page inserts} that fit both Erin Condren and Plum Paper Planners. For those of you still wondering about size, these pages are 7×8.75 created to fit a 7×9 planner.

The TpT Business Planner was designed with TeachersPayTeacher sellers and bloggers in mind. Each page focuses on  a specific aspect of the TpT selling experience from social media stats to blog and product planning.

Who does this planner benefit? Everyone interested being a successful business owner or blogger. You’re thinking to yourself but I don’t blog that seriously, is this really for me. My answer, yes. It ia s never to late to take a serious look at your blog. If it’s something that you love, build it up! This planner will help you to set goals for yourself and keep them.

I’ve printed the planner now what?
Here comes the fun part. Chanel your inner crafter and lets get started. In just 5 easy steps you will be #tptplanninglikeaboss

What You Need To Know About Image Format

As a designer, I understand the frustration that so many have when faced with choosing the right file type for their products. Let’s get real, as a teacher and business owner, I want to have the confidence to know that I am posting the best images to showcase my brand every. single. time. I get on Instagram or Pinterest.  Choosing the correct file format is key. I developed this quick guide as a cheat sheet for all you teachers, bloggers and avid Instagramer. This guide breaks image types down for you in terms you are sure to understand.

Images are a vital part of grabbing attention on the web or in print format. Choosing the right format is important. The quality of your images may be compromised if you choose to use the wrong file format. You. Do. Not. Want. That. I know it seems confusing but stick with me, it will all make sense in a moment.

Let’s talk TeachersPayTeachers for a moment.

The two most common file formats that you will see among sellers are .PNG and .PDF files. Most clipart artists like myself, will only offer .PNG formatted images to ensure that your are receiving the highest quality images possible. While many other sellers out there are choosing to use .PDF to secure images and guarantee a high quality product. Think about it. You’re on tpt to sell products right? Good. I thought so. So don’t overlook the importance of high quality work. Do you think if my designs weren’t saved as high resolution .PNG files that I would be as successful as I am. Umm, NO. Quality = repeat sales.

There are many different types of file formats.

I have identified the 6 most commonly used file formats in the chart below. The side by side comparison that you see below should serve as a visual aid to help you understand the differences between each file type.  This free file format guide will also give you a sense of what each file type is used for. Go ahead and download it. Print it out, laminate it and place it in your planner for quick reference.

I hope you have found this beginners guide to file formatting helpful. If you’re interested in learning more or your a design tip junkie like me, go ahead an subscribe to get updates on my new #DesignSchool Master Class. Learn design basics and how to use them to enhance your business. Stay tuned. Design School coming January 2017.
